About

Hi, my name is Rachael Summer Hughes and I received my Bachelor of Science from Colorado State University (CSU). While earning my bachelor degree I worked as a zoo veterinary assistant at the CSU Teaching Hospital and as a Lab Instructor. Upon graduating I spent time as a field zoologist conducting wildlife surveys for USGS and working on my Masters.

I earned my Masters in Education and Human Resource Studies and began teaching 7th and 8th grade science. To my surprise, there was no curriculum or science materials. This challenge turned into a blessing because Science is not learning from a textbook and I wanted students to be scientist and not read about it anyway. This led me to develop my own resources, differentiate for my diverse students and connect students with real world scientist.

This blog, Summer’s Learning Corner, serves as a tale of my adventures as a science teacher (6th – 9th grade) and instructional coach. My goals are to support and inspire teachers in creating a compelling science learning environment, provide rigorous student centered science materials and student supports for meeting diverse student needs.
